Chapter 125 The Demon Within
"The Geiger counter is about to explode, but since you're about to wrestle Doomsday bare-handed with your mortal body anyway, it doesn't matter to you."
Sitting in the cockpit, Batman looked at the radiation detection instruments on the helicopter's control panel, silently estimating the radiation level at the center of the battlefield, before confirming it again with the deranged Superman:
"Are you sure you want to go? If your guess is wrong, I won't risk my life to save your body fragments—I'll just bury an empty coffin."
"I can't just cower in the back and watch Diana get killed!"
Standing in the helicopter passenger cabin, Joey was no longer going to listen to Bruce's lame jokes trying to ease the tension. He just pounded on the cabin door and yelled at Bruce:
"Open the door right now, and then lower the rope."
The ground conditions were no longer suitable for a smooth landing, so Joey had to rappel down himself.
Amidst the roar of engines and propellers, Batman silently maneuvered the helicopter, slowly descending from the sky.
Fortunately, Doomsday seemed to temporarily suppress its destructive urges after noticing Joey's arrival.
It was as if its sole purpose in doing all this was to see Joey.
Otherwise, if the opponent were to use their heat vision to sweep over them, Joey and Bruce on the helicopter would have to go to the resurrection match on the spot.
After opening the hatch and lowering the drawbridge, Batman, who had been silent, looked at Joey, who was half-baked at studying the rappelling safety ropes, and after much deliberation, uttered a heartfelt remark:
"I admit, you are much braver than I imagined."
Superman's bravery doesn't always come from his body of steel, but more from his inner courage to risk his life and forge ahead to protect others.
Defeating the entire universe with a body of steel is not necessarily fearless courage, but risking one's life with flesh and blood is undoubtedly courage.
"Shut the hell up."
Joey couldn't tell if he was being brave or foolish. Even Batman's praise couldn't alleviate his anxiety at this moment.
All he knew was that Diana couldn't win this battle:
"If I'm wrong, I'll try my best to persuade Diana to run away, but you'd better be prepared to clean up the mess yourself."
Batman nodded, indicating that he understood.
After Joey completes the landing, he will immediately abandon the other person and fly away from the scene in the helicopter.
This was a decision that Joey and he had jointly made after discussing it on the way.
Without his equipment, Batman is useless in this level of combat, and he absolutely cannot risk his life by going with Joey at this moment.
In this team, there are people who are passionate and impulsive, but there also needs to be people who are cold-blooded and rational.
He also has a possible, perhaps, probably ultimate solution to stop Doomsday.
This solution is very mature and easy to replicate, but only if you have your own universe with complete equipment and data.
To replicate this in the world would require a lot of time and resources to start from scratch and try and fail step by step.
As for how many times we need to try and fail, whether we can get it done before Doomsday destroys the entire Earth, and what collateral damage it will cause afterward, all of these are unknowns.
While it's not entirely reliable, it's still much more plausible than Superman, who hasn't yet regained his powers, having to rely on radiation levels estimated at thousands of roentgens to communicate with Doomsday face-to-face.
As the helicopter descended, the rotor blades swept away the smoke that was obscuring the scene, and Joey, who was completely inexperienced, saw Wonder Woman, covered in blood and kneeling in a pool of blood, halfway down the rappelling line.
"Diana!"
Losing his composure, Joey couldn't maintain his footing on the rugged ground at the last moment of the rappelling and rolled over like a wolf.
Fortunately, even without a body of steel, Joey's physical condition was good enough that this only caused his khaki suit to get slightly dusty.
"Joey?!"
Diana, still in a daze, snapped to attention upon hearing Joey's voice. She then saw Joey, who was pulling himself down the rope, fall flat on his face. This immediately made her realize the gravity of the situation.
"By Zeus! Have you gone mad?! You have no regenerative abilities, are you here to die?!"
She chose to take up the Kryptonite sword and fight Doomsday here, not only to stop its indiscriminate killing, but more importantly to prevent Doomsday from finding Joey so quickly.
Now Joey has come to his own death!
"No, no, no, Diana, I've already thought of a solution!"
Joey gave Wonder Woman a confident smile:
"However, this method only works when you're not around—can you still fly? Get out of here first, and I promise I can take care of Doomsday right away!"
"You have no idea whether your method will even work, do you?"
The absence of the Lasso of Truth does not mean Wonder Woman is unable to distinguish between truth and lies. At this moment, she naturally knows that Joey simply wants her to leave the battlefield first.
At this moment, Diana was suffering terribly from the radiation, and the subconscious anxiety and unease caused by the radiation had nowhere to go, so she found a breakthrough:
"You ungrateful, suicidal fool! Now we're both going to die here!"
Joey, feeling uneasy under Doomsday's gaze, disagreed with Diana's accusations:
"Who said you're definitely going to die?! I only came here because I was at least 50% sure of survival, which is better than you being certain to die!"
Roar!
Just as the two were still bickering, Doomsday, which had been staring at Joey with extremely eager eyes, finally took action. It roared and leaped up, jumping over Wonder Woman and rushing straight at Joey.
"No!"
The severely injured Wonder Woman was unable to mount an effective counterattack and could only futilely throw the Kryptonite sword she had been holding tightly, even after her right mouse button was completely pierced through, at Doomsday's back.
Joey, on the other hand, had no time to react. The movements of the Kryptonian creatures and Amazons far exceeded the limits of his mortal reflexes.
For him, the moment he opened and closed his eyes, Doomsday's hand with sharp bone claws like Wolverine's appeared before him.
With the force of Doomsday's punch, Joey would probably be unevenly distributed across the 180-square-meter area behind him within the next 0.1 seconds.
boom!
Doomsday, who had thrown a full-force punch at Joey, was sent flying backward with a muffled thud after delivering a punch that was enough to crush the creature he most wanted to devour alive.
Joey remained unharmed, standing in the same spot.
It was as if Doomsday had punched itself in the face.
"Just as I thought."
Before Joey could even react or feel fear in the face of Doomsday's attack, she saw the other party inexplicably fly backward without her having done anything.
Joey watched as Doomsday was smashed and became dizzy, and his heart finally settled down.
The result I spent half a day pondering with the extraordinary wisdom of an ordinary person's brain has finally been confirmed.
"The Helmet of Fate did not actively separate our destinies; it was I who rejected you deep in my heart."
