The echo of Alex’s voice still rang in their ears as they fled through the winding tunnels of the former Dwarven capital.
"GO! Get out while you still can!"
The words felt like an execution order.
Tia’s boots slapped against the ancient stone, her breath harsh despite the cool mountain air. She hadn’t looked back—not once. That was her job. Follow orders. Move fast. Strike hard. Escape clean.
But this... this wasn’t clean.
Her twin, Tina, was ahead, slicing through the few Quagoa foolish enough to block their retreat. Each kill felt hollow. Mechanical. Like her daggers were moving on their own, independent of her will. Because all her thoughts were still back there—with him.
You idiot, Tia thought, the insult not entirely unkind. Why would you stay? Why play the hero now?
Behind her mask, she bit her lip. Alex was powerful—far beyond anything she could explain—but even gods could bleed. And she’d seen how the Quagoa moved. There were too many. And the dragons...
"Dammit," she muttered.
Evileye floated beside them, silent. Her crimson cloak billowed with each burst of acceleration. She hadn’t spoken since they left the chamber where Riyuro died. Her gloved hands trembled at her sides.
She didn’t want to leave either.
But she’d given the signal.
That was the plan, she told herself, over and over. The plan was to kill the leader, create chaos, and pull out. Alex was just playing a part. He’s strong enough to survive. He said so. He said—
A sharp pain twisted in her chest.
What if he lied?
Evileye clenched her fists tighter. For someone who had lived centuries and had seen entire civilizations rise and fall, one man should not have mattered this much.
And yet...
Gondo was bringing up the rear, huffing through his beard, warhammer dragging behind him. He looked the most conflicted of them all.
"He chose to stay," Gondo muttered, more to himself than to the others. "Didn’t ask us to fight. Just gave the order to leave."
Now what would happen to the Runesmith he talked about?
A bitter respect colored his tone.
Still, as the entrance to the capital came into view—lit faintly by the residual glowstones embedded in the walls—none of them felt relief. They weren’t escaping a battlefield. They were abandoning a comrade.
Tina slowed as they reached the last turn before the exit, slamming a hand against the wall to catch her breath. Her shoulders were tight, her face pale under the mask.
"We should go back," she snapped, her voice a harsh whisper.
"No," Tia said, though it hurt to say it. "He wanted us to leave."
"And if he dies?" Tina shot back.
Tia looked away. "Then... we make sure his death wasn’t meaningless."
Evileye landed beside them, eyes still on the tunnel behind them. She said nothing. Her mouth was a grim line beneath her mask.
You don’t understand, do you? She thought. He’s not supposed to die. He’s supposed to win. He always wins.
She couldn’t remember the last time she felt so uncertain.
The flicker of hope that had lit up inside her when Alex joined their cause—it felt like someone was trying to snuff it out.
And worse... she had helped.
"How long do we wait?" Gondo asked, breaking the silence.
No one answered immediately.
Evileye finally spoke. "He said to leave... but he didn’t say when he’d follow."
Tina narrowed her eyes. "He better come back. If he doesn’t..."
"What?" Tia asked,"
Tina turned away. "I don’t know. I just... I don’t want to lose another one."
Another one. It hit all of them like a blow.
Adventurers learned to bury their grief fast.
But they are not sure if they can forget him that fast. Something about him made him unforgettable.
And now he was behind them, alone, surrounded by an army—and they had left him there.
The silence dragged on as they waited.
No one sat. No one spoke.
Just the distant drip of water from the old dwarven architecture and the pounding rhythm of four hearts too afraid to hope and too stubborn to grieve.
Minutes passed.
Then ten.
Then twenty.
Still, no sign of him.
"What are we going to say to Solution and Clementine?" Tia asked.
None of them answer because they also do not know what to say.
"Damn it, I am going back. If I can at least get his corpse, then Laykus can resurrect him. I am not leaving here without anything to remember him by." Evileye said.
"I am happy you think that, but there is no need for that."
