Chapter 846
Chapter 846
“Are you staying with your family or something?” Anton asked the two youths.“Our families occupied a couple of rooms in the Bottom. I’m staying with my parents and sister, while Eric is with his parents and two younger brothers,” Joel said.
“Why are your families returning to Izmorta?”
“My father was friends with a wizard from the Forest of Oak Magical Organization when they were younger, and he thought Eric and I would have a good chance of entering the organization through that connection,” Joel explained.
“So you and Eric are magically talented? Why didn’t you just enroll in the magical academies in Ormunda?”
“Our families simply didn’t have the funds to send us to magic schools. My father also insisted that the magical aptitude of the wizards in Izmorta was on an entirely different level compared to the wizards of the Gale Continent, despite the fact that he knew nothing about wizardry himself. He kept saying that something like the Undead Coalition would never have survived in Izmorta. According to him, any magical organization there could wipe out an undead organization like that without much trouble. I don’t know if it’s true, and I highly doubt it is, but my father was the head of both our families, so all we could do was follow his decision, even if it meant uprooting everyone and moving to Izmorta.”
“Why did he suddenly decide on something like that?”
“My father received a letter from his friend telling him that the Forest of Oak Magical Organization would be holding a recruitment drive a year and a few months from now, together with the other magical organizations in Izmorta. According to the letter, this kind of recruitment drive only happens once every hundred years,” Joel said.
“The magical organizations recruit that rarely?!”
“People can still apply to become members if they have enough money to pay for the application process or if they have the right connections, but during recruitment drives, the process is free. Otherwise, from what we heard, the cost is astronomical,” Joel continued.
“I find it curious that magical organizations in Izmorta don’t seem to have any minimum age requirements,” Anton commented.
“Are you wondering why we’re still interested in joining even though we’re already at an… advanced age?” Eric asked.
Joel laughed at Eric’s choice of words, which made it sound as though the two of them were old men.
“A little, but it also works to my advantage since I’m planning to join a magical organization in Izmorta as well. I’m confident, though. Even if I’m around the same age as you two, I’ve already attained a high rank in wizardry, and my magical talent is prodigious enough that I doubt I’ll have any trouble joining an organization there. I’m also very rich.”
Their conversation paused when both Joel’s and Eric’s stomachs growled loudly, making it clear they needed food to calm the beasts inside them. Anton was hungry as well, so the three of them headed to the Revere Restaurant, where they continued talking while waiting for their orders.
“It’s certainly an advantage that your talent is high, but the thing that prevents many established young wizards from joining the magical organizations in Izmorta is the requirement that new members must start from scratch. According to my father, who learned the details from his friend, anyone who joins one of the magical organizations in Izmorta has to undergo something they call a ‘Rebirth.’ My father’s friend wrote that every magical organization performs the ritual, and once the Rebirth is completed, all spells are stripped from the new member’s mind. It’s supposedly done to ensure that the new member becomes a blank slate capable of accepting the magical system taught by the organization,” Joel explained.
Eric, meanwhile, barely paid attention to the conversation as he looked around the luxurious restaurant with wide-eyed curiosity.
What Joel said made Anton pause.
He had never heard of this “Rebirth” process before. After thinking about it for a few minutes, however, he became certain that his Diablo System would not be affected. His system was far too powerful to be stripped away by a mere ritual. As for the few ordinary spells he had memorized, such as Cleaning Spells and several others he rarely used, losing them would hardly matter.
Even so, Anton could not help but wonder what kind of magical system the organizations in Izmorta followed. Although he trusted the power of his Diablo System, a small sense of unease still lingered in his mind.
It was not enough to stop him.
He also wondered why no one had ever mentioned such an important detail about the magical organizations of Izmorta. After thinking about it, Anton realized that he had shared his goal of traveling to Izmorta with very few people, most of whom knew little to nothing about magical organizations.
Soon, their food arrived, and for the next several minutes, the three youths focused entirely on eating. They devoured their meals with complete disregard for appearances. Fortunately, they had arrived during a quiet hour, so the restaurant was nearly empty, and the few customers present were seated far enough away that they were unlikely to be disturbed by the trio’s table manners.
In truth, Anton, Joel, and Eric were not slobs. They simply ate at an astonishing pace, as though the food might disappear if they did not inhale it the moment it touched the table. Anton only found himself matching Joel’s and Eric’s speed because their enthusiasm was strangely infectious. It reminded him of how people often became hungry while watching those “mukbang” videos on some of the internet’s most famous streaming websites.
After several minutes, once there was enough food in their stomachs for them to calm down and eat more leisurely, their conversation resumed.
“The organization you’re planning to join… is it considered a ‘Black,’ ‘White,’ or ‘Neutral’ magical organization?”
“Oh? You know about that?” Joel asked.
“A merchant I met who was returning to Izmorta with his family told me a few things about the magical organizations there. He did warn me not to mention those classifications to members of the organizations themselves since they apparently don’t refer to themselves that way,” Anton replied.
“Your merchant friend was right. My father told us the same thing. Still, ordinary people can’t help using those labels because they make the organizations easier to classify. According to my father’s friend, the Forest of Oak is considered a Neutral magical organization, though it leans toward Black. Do you have any preference regarding the kind of organization you want to join?” Joel asked.
“Yes. I’d prefer joining a Neutral organization. I don’t want to join a Black organization because I don’t want to be forced into doing things I might find distasteful. At the same time, I don’t want to join a White organization because I’m worried their rules would be so rigid that studying magic under them would become unbearably dull,” Anton said.
Joel and Eric burst into laughter after hearing Anton’s reasoning. Despite talking, neither of them had stopped eating.
Once they finished their meals, Joel and Eric explained that they needed to return to the Bottom to show themselves to their families before anyone started worrying that they had disappeared. Anton decided to accompany them since he was curious to see what the Bottom looked like.
Afterward, the three of them headed toward the restaurant’s exit.
Joel suddenly looked at Anton curiously.
“Are you not going to pay?”
Anton blinked in surprise at the question.
“Don’t worry. I don’t need to pay at high-class establishments like the Revere. My bills are handled by my family.”
In truth, the bills were being covered by Ormunda.
“So you never have to pay anywhere?” Eric asked in awe.
“When it comes to ordinary shops, I still have to pay,” Anton replied simply.
