Chapter 75 Fishing for Dreams
Chapter 75 Fishing for Dreams
In an office of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Yuecheng City Police Department, five people sat together, studying the interpretation report that Yuecheng University had just sent. Director Shi, Yu Zhen, and Wei Hongbo were among them, along with two other capable officers transferred from the division.
The office door opened, and a man in his early fifties walked in. His surname was Liang; he had recently been sent from Beijing to serve as the head of the "June 13th" task force. As the investigation deepened, the police gathered more and more leads, and the level of the person in charge of the case continued to rise.
"Director Liang." Everyone stood up to greet him.
"Please have a seat, everyone." Director Liang gestured for him to sit down, then sat down next to Director Shi and placed the documents he was holding on the table. "Take a look at this."
These are two pages of photographs printed on A4 paper using a color printer.
The first photo shows a corpse that has decomposed into a gigantic state, with obvious bulges in its chest and abdomen.
There was a tattoo on the corpse's chest. Although it was somewhat deformed due to the swelling of the skin, it was still easy to recognize. It was a sun pattern with an eye in the center. The eyelid with vertical lines stretched all the way to the edge of the sun pattern.
The second photo is a close-up of the tattoo on the chest, and it looks like it's not the same person as the one in the first photo, and the skin isn't distorted.
More details can be seen in this photo. The upper "eyelid" edge shows a more obvious Cupid's bow shape, and the lower "eyelid" also has obvious vertical lines.
So it wasn't an eye at all, but a black eyeball peeking out from between open lips, with clear details of the pupil and iris.
The human figures in both photos exhibit distinct Caucasian features.
The people present were all veteran criminal investigators, having seen countless corpses at the Giant View Museum, so they no longer felt any discomfort. However, the somewhat eerie tattoo design caused them to experience a slightly unusual psychological fluctuation.
Yu Zhen asked, "Director Liang, is this a case from overseas?"
"Yes." Director Liang nodded. "Fifteen years ago, a case of credit manipulation by a state-owned bank occurred in Country R (a large northern country). At that time, their country was carrying out financial market reforms. Five core executives of a large state-owned commercial bank were bribed and controlled, and a huge amount of unsecured, low-interest loans were issued to a shell company."
"After obtaining loans, shell companies quickly transfer the funds to offshore accounts and then launder them through fraudulent trade and cross-border investments. This alone has caused banks to lose more than 160 billion yuan."
"Meanwhile, those bribed and controlled executives were also engaging in insider trading in the financial market, selling and buying shares of banks in advance. The manipulators behind the scenes used insider information to manipulate bank stock price fluctuations, buying low and selling high through overseas accounts, profiting more than 50 billion yuan."
"After the relevant departments in Country R discovered the situation, they began an investigation, and soon they traced it back to those five executives. Then they all died. The official explanation given to the public was that they committed suicide out of fear of punishment. But internal investigation data showed that the cause of death for those five people was very strange."
He pointed to the photo of the giant statue, saying, "Although there is a lack of substantial evidence, Country R believes that this person is the mastermind behind the loan case."
Yu Zhen asked curiously, "So how was this person caught?"
Director Liang pondered for a moment and said, "Country R sent agents to cross the border directly to the place where this person appeared to arrest him. After being brought back to the country, the person attempted to escape but was shot dead during the process. However, it took several days for his body to be found."
Wei Hongbo asked, "Are the causes of death of those five senior executives similar to those of the two victims in our case?"
Director Liang said, "I'm not entirely sure either. More detailed information will be sent over later, and we'll confirm it then."
The bureau chief pointed to another photo and asked, "So this is a different case?"
"That's right." Director Liang nodded. "This case also happened in R country, but it happened a long time ago, about eighteen years ago."
"At the time, this person gained control of three subsidiaries of a conglomerate through unknown means, then applied for a tax refund of over two billion yuan by forging documents, and quickly transferred the funds after approval. The R country authorities tracked down this person, and during his extradition, he went into shock and died shortly afterward."
Yu Zhen pondered for a moment and said, "This situation is very similar to that of Mu Jie, the suspect in our case."
Director Liang said, "Shortly after the death of the main culprit in this tax refund case, the R country official in charge of overseeing the case received a threatening letter, in which someone claimed to be retaliating."
"In that bank credit manipulation case, the deaths of the five bank executives coincided with the death of the official in charge of overseeing the tax refund case; it was a classic case of murder. The R country's officials believe that both the credit scandal and the official's death were acts of retaliation from that organization."
Upon hearing his words, the others frowned, and a strange emotion appeared in their eyes.
Yu Zhen snorted and said, "We'll investigate this case thoroughly. We want to see if that organization has the guts. We've been worried about not being able to find them!"
Director Shi cleared his throat and said, "Director Liang, shouldn't we send a copy of this tattoo design to the decoding team immediately? As far as I know, it would be helpful for their further decoding work."
Director Liang said, "Of course, but these two photos shouldn't be sent out directly."
He had read the description of the "totem" in the previous decoding report and felt it was somewhat similar to the files he had seen before. He then consulted his colleagues in Beijing, which led to these two photos. The only difference was that the tattoo design did not contain Latin script.
Based on the current situation, the "June 13" case bears some resemblance to the two cases that occurred in Country R. Combined with this pattern, it's almost certain that it was the work of an organized group.
Wei Hongbo said, "Then I'll make a copy."
He found a pencil and a blank A4 sheet of paper, and began to trace the tattoo design from the photograph. His sketching skills were quite impressive and had played a crucial role in several cases.
The design was completed quickly, and everyone who saw it thought it looked exactly like the tattoo in the photo.
Wei Hongbo then photographed the hand-drawn sketch and sent it out through the communication channel between the task force and the decoding team.
Director Liang said, "There should be some records of related cases in Beijing. I have already commissioned someone to compile them. Especially those from recent years, which may give us more clues."
Director Shi said, "The analysis report provided by the Paradise Group, which mentions seven companies, can also serve as a search lead."
Director Liang said, "That's right."
