Chapter 67 Peeping into Dreams
Chapter 67 Peeping into Dreams
What Director Shi and the others didn't know was that Wei Hongsi had never even considered inviting any experts.
As a recent graduate, he had no connections whatsoever; his only close relationships were with a few senior classmates. He figured that not everyone would be busy, and if three or four people could spare the time to help, plus Zheng Han and Yu Xiufeng, that would be enough manpower.
Meanwhile, Zheng Han's phone call with Feng Weixu continued.
The police commissioned a team led by Feng Weixu to produce an investigation report. The two parties had signed an agreement, and the briefing covered some information related to the case, so it was considered to have a certain basis.
Therefore, although it was inconvenient to go into details over the phone, Zheng Han still tried to tell as much as she could.
After listening, Feng Weixu said, "I'm quite interested in this. When do you plan to start?"
Zheng Han quickly replied, "Of course, the sooner the better."
There was a few seconds of silence on the other end of the phone, then Feng Weixu said, "How about this, 6:30 tonight? You name a place, let's meet up and talk, okay?"
"6:30? No problem!" Zheng Han agreed while looking at Director Shi, pointing downwards. Seeing Director Shi nod, he said, "Then let's do it at the Criminal Investigation Division of the District Branch."
After the two made the appointment, Zheng Han hung up the phone and said to Wei Hongsi, "Teacher Feng has agreed to join and will come over tonight. Shall we discuss the implementation plan then?"
Wei Hongsi guessed that there were still things to deal with at the company and he might not have time in the evening, so he said, "I probably can't come tonight. How about we agree on a framework now and then add the details when you meet tonight?"
"Uh... okay," Zheng Han said somewhat helplessly.
When they arranged to meet by phone the night before, they only agreed to meet in the afternoon, not in the evening. Wei Hongsi had made arrangements in advance, which was understandable, and he couldn't say anything. He just felt a little awkward, as if he had encountered a boss who was not taking responsibility.
Wei Hongsi said to Xiufeng, "Teacher Yu, could you please provide a blank spreadsheet document?"
Yu Xiufeng created a new document on her computer and projected it onto the large screen. Wei Hongsi stood in front of the screen and described the implementation plan. Yu Xiufeng filled in the corresponding forms according to his dictation.
Actually, if Wei Hongsi were to write on his own computer, it would be much faster. It's just that he's not used to using other people's computers, and many people don't like handing over their computers to others. Besides, writing on a large screen is equivalent to going through the process together.
However, this framework implementation plan was mainly based on Wei Hongsi's ideas. He listed the main tasks for each stage, made a rough division of labor for key tasks, and marked the time required for each stage.
Through this plan, Zheng Han and Yu Xiufeng realized that Wei Hongsi had already considered the entire process comprehensively after proposing the technology upgrade. They had to admit that this young man's thinking was very quick, and he considered everything before they did, so they didn't have much to add.
However, Zheng Han had a different opinion regarding the timeline. After Wei Hongsi finished explaining and outlining the entire plan, he finally couldn't help but say, "Professor Wei, isn't this timeline a bit too tight?"
Hearing this, Wei Hongsi looked at the screen and went through the whole process again, re-estimated the time required for each step, and then said, "It should be about right. If you feel the time is too tight, you can adjust it when you discuss the details tonight."
"Okay." Zheng Han felt helpless again.
Wei Hongsi glanced at the time displayed on the screen; it was already past 3 p.m. He immediately bid farewell to everyone and left the branch office to return to the company.
After seeing Wei Hongsi off, Director Shi looked at the plan on the big screen. He didn't quite understand the technical details, but the timeline was clear at a glance.
He had heard Zheng Han's question earlier, so he asked, "Professor Zheng, isn't the timeline in this plan compressed too much?"
"It's not just that it's been compressed too much; I was being rather mild in my assessment," Zheng Han said with a wry smile. "To put it bluntly, it's completely unrealistic."
"Yes," Yu Xiufeng echoed. "Take the task of 'establishing a basic language stimulus database' for example. We estimate it will take at least seven to ten days, but Teacher Wei only allocated one or two days. This is simply impossible to complete."
Zheng Han added, "The key point is the work of building this 'neural translation package.' Based on my experience with similar work before, it would take at least four to six weeks to complete. Professor Wei's plan is only seven days—that's a huge difference!"
Director Shi nodded slowly, a hint of disappointment in his eyes.
According to Wei Hongsi's timeline, the entire project would take about 25 days to complete, but the special neural signals could be deciphered on the 8th day, and the first valuable dream report could be submitted on the 10th day.
He initially thought that completing the task within this timeframe was passable, considering that the suspect, Mu Jie, had been unconscious for a week. If things went smoothly, finishing a day or two ahead of schedule would have been even better.
After hearing Zheng Han say this, I realized that even "so-so" was already a luxury.
Zheng Han looked at Director Shi's expression and guessed what he was thinking, so he said, "Director Shi, we know that the sooner we get the clues, the better, but some steps really can't be rushed."
Looking at the large screen, Director Shi recalled how Wei Hongsi had laid out the plan earlier. Although he lacked the imposing manner of Wei Hongsi, he also remained calm and composed throughout, as if he were working on a simple math problem. Director Shi couldn't help but feel more confident in the young man.
He pondered for a moment and said, "Then let's do this: list your fastest estimated times on this table as the upper limit of the time. The time that Teacher Wei listed will be the lower limit. We'll discuss the revised times with Teacher Feng tonight."
Zheng Han thought for a moment and said, "Okay."
Then they discussed it with Yu Xiufeng and added another column to the table, writing down what they considered to be the shortest possible time, as the upper limit for the time of this plan.
While this approach may seem somewhat abstract, it's a common practice among leaders when creating timelines; a proper sense of urgency can indeed improve work efficiency. Zheng Han wouldn't agree to this for general research work either. But when it comes to investigating cases, some pressure is unavoidable.
After the plan is revised, some preliminary preparations can begin.
Upgrading technology requires configuring corresponding equipment. Especially for high-tech applications, resources are limited, and delays can occur if coordination isn't planned in advance. This timeframe wasn't included in their timeline.
