Chapter 451: Doubts About Heaven and Earth
Chapter 451: Doubts About Heaven and Earth
At Ji Yuan’s level of cultivation, he rarely dreamt. Normally, even if he did dream, they would usually be the kind that he controlled, where he manifested scenes in his dream, similar to entering a meditative state. Given the special nature of his inner world, Ji Yuan’s sleep could be considered a unique form of cultivation.1Of course, Ji Yuan also slept normally. After all, sleep was quite a comfortable thing. Even cultivators, as far as Ji Yuan knew, needed to sleep. Some even dreamt for half a year or even several years at a time.
Ji Yuan originally intended to consolidate his gains from the Heaven-Rending Sword Technique and, with the help of a trace of profound insight gained by combining supernatural power with the power of the Transformation of Heaven and Earth to perform various techniques, he intended break through the shackles that prevented him from further enhancing his Dimensional Storage.2
Last time, there had been a major breakthrough in the “Hidden Universe in a Sleeve” technique. Ji Yuan also wanted to incorporate the application of spiritual power into it. This was because he had been influenced by the methods used by the Old Dragon when he captured the monk Huitong.3 He had also made a breakthrough right before Lu Chengfeng, who was had been feeling disheartened at the time, came to visit.
That discovery had made the “Hidden Universe in a Sleeve” technique reality, no longer just a pipe dream. It was no longer just an ordinary dimensional storage technique; the space had greatly increased. He no longer had to worry about carrying a bag for his belongings, or having to specially refine and carve up a fishing rod before you he could use it.
However, after that last time, it had only progressed to a point. As Ji Yuan’s spiritual power became more and more profound, and his Five Elements were perfected, his dimensional storage grew larger and larger, and he could even divide it into separate areas. He had also developed some wonderful uses for it, but it was still far from what Ji Yuan had imagined.
Although Ji Yuan’s “Hidden Universe in a Sleeve” was now a remarkable dimensional storage technique in the cultivation world—convenient, fast, with a large capacity, and stylish—Ji Yuan wanted more than just storage abilities.
This time, however, Ji Yuan’s sleep was a little unusual. Before he could even enter a meditative state, his fatigue gradually increased as soon as he fell asleep.
He had overexerted his mind when using the Heaven-Rending Sword Technique that day, and afterwards, due to the earth’s poison, he had been constantly on high alert and had not been able to get proper rest, so his mind had not been able to recover. Now that he had relaxed, Ji Yuan was feeling sleepy.
‘Let’s just go to sleep, get some good rest…’
For Ji Yuan, there was no difference between restoring his mind through meditation or through sleep, so he naturally chose the more comfortable method.
With this thought in mind, Ji Yuan finally fell into a deep sleep, and slept for ten days. On the tenth day, he even had a short dream, a real dream, which was quite rare.
As the saying went, what you think about during the day, you dream about at night. In his dream, Ji Yuan seemed to have returned to his past life, back to his home, and even seemed to have become his childhood self, sitting next to his grandfather and watching programs on that bulky old-fashioned black and white television.
This black and white television only had twelve channels, even with cable TV, and one had to manually turn the channel knob to switch it. It had been Ji Yuan’s most important source of joy when he was a child, as he relied on it to watch TV and play video games.
Right now, the TV was playing “Journey to the West.”4 Perhaps due to his thoughts being projected into his dream, several other channels were also showing “Journey to the West,” though they were on different episodes. Ji Yuan switched channels twice and saw two different segments playing each one.
One scene depicted Sun Wukong attempting to somersault out of Buddha’s palm, believing he had reached the ends of the earth, and urinating on Buddha’s finger.
Another scene took place outside Wuzhuang Temple. Sun Wukong, in a fit of temper, broke the ginseng fruit tree. Realizing he had caused trouble, he tried to escape with Tang Sanzang and his junior brothers, only to be captured by Zhen Yuanzi using his “Universe in a Sleeve” technique.
Ji Yuan was now completely focused on the TV, thinking about how Sun Wukong had fallen victim to similar supernatural powers on both occasions.
The dream was short, just a few fragments. Ji Yuan on the bed frowned slightly, and his mind regained control of his thoughts in his sleep.
The dream began to change, transforming into a vast world, with mountains and rivers, and finally into the expansive mountain range that once stood before the fissure in the earth’s veins.
Ji Yuan still stood on that mountain peak, observing the surrounding demons. However, there were no cultivators from Xianxia Island fighting against them; there was only a scene of demons dancing wildly.
“Heaven-Rending Sword.”
He murmured, tracing the Green Vine Sword in his dream with his sword-fingers.
The immortal sword instantly transformed into light and ascended into the sky. Then, the essence of mountains and rivers was manifested within the sword, connecting with the power of heaven and earth.
The sky seemed to glam with the white light of the sword, pressing down with the force of fthe collapsing heavens. The power of the Heaven-Rending Sword Technique in the dream was far greater than before. Perhaps because the world in the dream was a manifestation of his own mental conception, allowing for the technique to be used more freely. With the Heaven-Rending Sword Technique unleashed, the heavenly energy surged, the mountains and rivers trembled, and a terrifying pressure, as if the end of the world had arrived, descended.
The surrounding demons fled in panic, some even crashing to the ground in terror, appearing almost frenzied. Before the sword strike even landed, some of the demons were already covered in blood and vanished into a bloody mist, caused by the self-destruction of their demonic energy.
Ji Yuan pointed his sword downwards again, and another rain of demons fell. However, this time, many demons in the air either turned into blood mist or spontaneously combusted. When they fell to the ground, none of them were intact; they were all utterly annihilated.
Ji Yuan sat down on the mountaintop again, but this time not out of exhaustion. He simply sat down casually and freely, and looking at everything around him. He couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Tsk tsk, how would I put it in my past life… oh right, it’s all about exuding superiority!”
Then Ji Yuan stood up again, shook his clothes, and looked at his sleeves.
“The Heaven-Rending Sword Technique borrows the power of heaven and earth to strike the heart, while the Universe in the Sleeve borrows the power of heaven and earth to conceal the form… It’s still not quite there… To wield the power of heaven and earth, one must possess the momentum of heaven and earth…”
His thoughts were unsettled in his dream, and Ji Yuan’s brows furrowed slightly outside of it.
Outside, in the courtyard of Ju’an Pavilion, a group of little calligraphy spirits had been playing games against each other for a long time, showing no signs of boredom. They were having a great time. Meanwhile, the little paper crane was watching a group of bees busily moving back and forth among the jujube blossoms, acting just like a little supervisor.
A soft “click” drew the attention of the paper crane and all the small characters in the courtyard. They focused their attention on a corner of the courtyard wall, where a red fox stood up from its slightly bent legs, its fur trembling.
“See that? The stupid fox is here!”
“Yes, it’s rude not to knock!”
“But what if the master wakes up when he knocks on the door?”
“Yes, yes, it’s better not to knock!”
“His pelt would be worth a lot of money if sold to a fur merchant, wouldn’t it?”
“Of course, that fur…”
…
The murmur of whispers reached Hu Yun’s ears, causing him to stiffen. He then jumped onto the stone table in the courtyard and looked around.
“Come out, all of you, come out! Where are you? If you’re all here, Mr. Ji must surely be back!”
Hu Yun shouted a few times to the beings around him in a low voice, but the little characters were incredibly good at hiding; their voices could clearly be heard, but they could not be seen.
Then Hu Yun subconsciously looked at the main room of Ju’an Pavilion. The door was closed, and he could neither hear nor sense anything. Mr. Ji was probably sleeping inside.
The little characters didn’t come out, but the paper crane that had been hovering among the trees flew down and landed on the table. Hu Yun smiled happily; Mr. Ji had indeed already returned.
Ji Yuan left in a hurry before, and Hu Yun had been sent back by Bai Qi. He had been back in Niu Kui Mountain for more than a month and was a little worried about Ji Yuan, or rather, he was afraid that Ji Yuan would not come back for a long time. He had visited twice before, but the small pavilion was empty. This time, he came at the right time.
“When did you get back? Oh, by the way, I have something to give to Mr. Ji!”
Hu Yun winked mysteriously at the little paper crane, his fluffy tail swaying rhythmically up and down. The paper crane tilted its head and looked at Hu Yun’s tail; it knew where this fox usually hid things.
“Oh, what is it?”
A calm voice came from inside the house, and then the door creaked open from the inside, revealing Ji Yuan, who had changed into a blue robe.
“Mr. Ji! You’re back?”
“Haha, aren’t I standing right in front of you? What’s wrong? Did Bai Qi bully you?”
Hu Yun shook his head vigorously, like a rattle drum.
“No, no, River God Bai is fine. Oh, by the way, I found something good in the mountains and came to give it to you, sir!”
“Hahaha… what could you possibly have found…”
Ji Yuan trailed off as Hu Yun pulled out two gold nuggets from his large tail. Judging by their size, they were at least half the size of a palm and were definitely not light.
“Hahaha, sir, all mortals love gold. It seems that Lord Lu Shan took quite a lot with him before he left, but I couldn’t find any. I was lucky this time; I dug out two pieces while digging in a rabbit’s burrow, so I brought them to you!”
Ji Yuan subconsciously walked out of the courtyard and turned to look in the direction of Niu Kui Mountain.
‘Could there be a gold mine in these mountains?’
“Mr. Ji, how many copper coins is this gold worth? Is it a lot?”
Hu Yun asked. He already had a good grasp of the value of copper coins, but he didn’t know much about gold. Ji Yuan smiled and replied when he heard this.
“It’s worth a lot of money. If I spend it like this, I estimate it would last for a hundred years.”
“Oh, sir, would you like it?”
Hu Yun presented the gold nugget to Ji Yuan like a treasure, and the latter smiled and accepted it without any hesitation.
“Yes, of course I would. I’ve been living in this mortal world for quite some time, and one can never lack money, no matter what.”
Hu Yun, who had already prepared himself for rejection, was overjoyed to see that Ji Yuan had accepted his offer.
Ji Yuan weighed the two gold ingots in his hand. They made a clinking sound. They weighed several kilograms, which was equivalent to several hundred taels of silver, a huge sum of money for Ji Yuan.
After putting the gold nuggets into his sleeve, Ji Yuan looked up at the top of the jujube tree, raised his sleeve, and flicked it upwards.
A faint whistling sound came from his sleeve, as if the air inside the Ju’an Pavilion were swirling back towards Ji Yuan’s sleeve, drawing all the bees from the tree towards him.
However, the moment the swarm of bees got close, Ji Yuan immediately dissipated his spiritual power, allowing the panicked bees to escape frantically.
“No, no, that’s not how it works…”
Although the force just now looked impressive, it seemed as if they were being drawn in by the wind, whereas the way an old dragon’s claws grabbed people seemed much more effortless.
T/n: How much do you want to bet that the “grabbing technique” is either insanely high level stuff, or that JY finds a roundabout way to accomplish it that’s somehow more ridiculous? ????
T/n: man I WISH my sleep could let me cultivate. I would probably get more of it then LOL T/n: friendly reminder that this is technically called “Universe in a Sleeve” (you might see it translated as that elsewhere) but Dimensional Storage got the meaning across better See ch. 246 This likely refers to , an animated series adapting the original books. I’ve actually watched a bit of it, it’s quite fun.
