Chapter 133: The Unexpected Stay
Chapter 133: The Unexpected Stay
The cool night air carried a gentle breeze as Matthew Hesh and Amber Fitzwilliam left the quiet streets of Sylvania behind. The dinner at The Silver Lark had been a rare reprieve for Matthew, and walking alongside Amber felt like stepping out of his relentless world of business and ambition, even if just for a while.@@@@
Amber held his arm loosely, her head tilted slightly toward him as they strolled toward the taxi stand. A single automobile, its polished black frame glinting under the gas lamps, was parked along the curb. The driver stepped out and tipped his hat as Matthew hailed him.
"Fitzwilliam Estate," Matthew instructed, opening the door for Amber. She slid into the cab gracefully, and he followed, settling into the plush leather seat beside her.
The hum of the engine filled the silence as the automobile wound its way through the quiet roads leading to the Fitzwilliam Estate. Amber gazed out of the window, her expression soft and content. Matthew, on the other hand, found himself glancing at her more often than he intended, the memory of her confession from earlier still lingering in his mind.
"Thank you for tonight," Amber said suddenly, breaking the quiet. She turned to face him, her eyes warm. "It was... perfect."
Matthew nodded, his lips curving into a small smile. "I should be thanking you. I haven’t felt this relaxed in—well, I can’t even remember when."
Amber chuckled softly. "Maybe you should take evenings like this more often."
"Maybe I should," he admitted. "But with everything happening at Hesh Industries, it’s not that simple."
Amber reached over, her fingers brushing his arm lightly. "I know it’s not simple. But I’m glad you made time for this—for me."
The cab slowed as they approached the grand gates of the Fitzwilliam Estate. The imposing ironwork gleamed under the moonlight, and beyond it, the sprawling grounds and the stately manor came into view. The estate was an architectural marvel, with its towering columns and immaculate gardens, a symbol of the Fitzwilliam family’s wealth and influence.
The driver opened the door, and Matthew stepped out first, offering a hand to Amber. She accepted it, stepping onto the cobblestone driveway with an elegant ease. The house staff, ever attentive, opened the main doors as they approached, bowing slightly in greeting.
"Thank you for bringing me home," Amber said softly, her voice carrying a hint of reluctance. She hesitated, then added, "Would you like to come in for a moment?"
Matthew glanced at the grand doorway, then shook his head politely. "I appreciate the offer, but I should head back. It’s late, and you should get some rest."
Amber laughed, leading him to a small sitting room near the guest quarters. "While we wait, let’s sit for a bit."
The sitting room was cozy, with plush armchairs and a roaring fireplace. Amber took a seat near the fire, and Matthew settled across from her, the warmth of the flames washing over him.
"Thank you for staying," Amber said after a moment, her voice softer now. "I know it’s not something you’re used to."
Matthew shrugged. "It’s not a big deal. Besides, I didn’t want to upset you."
Amber smiled. "Well, I appreciate it. It’s nice to have you here."
Matthew leaned back in his chair, his gaze meeting hers. "You’ve always had a way of convincing me, haven’t you?"
Amber’s cheeks flushed faintly, and she looked down at her hands. "I suppose I have. But only because you let me."
They fell into a comfortable silence, the crackling of the fire filling the room. For Matthew, the evening felt like a rare respite, a chance to step away from the endless demands of his work and simply be present. And for Amber, it was a moment to savor, a quiet connection that spoke volumes without words.
A while later, Mr. Greaves returned to inform them that the guest room was ready. Amber stood, her expression tinged with reluctance. "I suppose I should let you rest. It’s been a long day."
Matthew followed her to the west wing, where the guest room awaited. The room was spacious and tastefully decorated, with a large bed, a writing desk, and a window overlooking the moonlit gardens.
"Thank you, Amber," Matthew said, turning to her. "This is more than enough."
Amber lingered in the doorway, her hands clasped in front of her. "Goodnight, Matthew. And... thank you for tonight. It meant a lot to me."
Matthew smiled, his voice gentle. "Goodnight, Amber. I’m glad we had this evening."
As she closed the door behind her, Matthew sat on the edge of the bed, the events of the night playing over in his mind. Despite his initial hesitation, he couldn’t deny that staying had been the right choice.
